CHAPTER TWELVE

MARCO

It’s late—or very early in the morning—when I step into Lina’s room to find Enzo in the armchair, wide awake, staring at Lina like he’s afraid she might just disappear at any moment. My gaze all too naturally slides over to the bed where River is lying on her back, her still-damp hair a sexy mess on the top of her head, wearing her favorite beige pajamas. Half of my walk-in closet still belongs to her and I refuse to change that. There isn’t a doubt in my mind that she’ll be back. The only variable is… when.

Every fiber in my body wants to keep her close, at home, where she belongs. But from the moment I inserted myself into her life, it’s been a game of one step forward and three miles back.

“Tyler called me to bitch me out.” I frown at Enzo’s words, my eyes never deviating from the woman who has been consuming my every waking thought.

“How did he get your number?” Tyler and I are a lot alike. We both need control. We both have the means to have and keep that control. When he decided to get married to that ungrateful bitch, I warned him, but he was convinced they were in love. When she stepped out on him with his college buddy, who is also his business partner, I offered to put out a hit on them. He declined, although there was a second’s pause where I thought he’d take me up on my offer.

But Tyler Walker prides himself on always doing the right thing. Underneath that hard exterior, he longs for the family he had before his sister died tragically at an all too young age.

“Fuck if I know, he’s got almost as many connections as you. Hell, most of them are the same ones.” The armchair creaks as he leans forward, his hands in a steeple.

It’s like he’s praying to the God he gave up on the day his deadbeat parents decided he wasn’t worth it as they drove forty minutes to the Sisters of Life convent, dropped him off, and never looked back.

He was six. Too young to understand, but old enough to feel the abandonment. He rarely talks about his past and I wonder if, one day, I’ll get the whole story.

River stirs and my instinct is to go to her, pick her up and tuck her away in my bedroom where she would stay for the rest of her days. Obviously, I’m not stupid enough to act on that. Barely.

“He’s got eyes on her?” Knowing Lina, she figured it out and ditched them as easily as she lost our crew. Enzo scoffs and it’s all the answer I need.

“He tried. Then blamed me for letting her get into a dangerous situation.” I don’t understand how he can stand by and watch her date another guy, knowing damn well he’s been in love with her since they were kids. Before they even knew what love meant.

“He’ll learn that Lina is impossible to keep under control.
